Bocce Rules

1. The teams decide which team will go first (flip of a coin).
2. All four players stand at one end of the court.
3. The team that is going to bowl first (the "First Team") tosses the small, yellow object ball (the "jack") within the bounds of the court.
4. The jack must travel at least half way down the court, as measured by the marks on the sideboards.
5. If the jack hits the far endboard, the other team retrieves it and comes back and throws it. If that team does not throw the jack at least halfway down the court, or hits the endboard, then the First Team gets to throw the jack, and they continue to alternate until one team throws the jack correctly.
6. The First Team then begins by bowling one of its four balls toward the jack. The other team then bowls one ball toward the jack. The teams continue to alternate bowling between teams and between the two players on each team until all of the balls have been bowled. 7. The balls can be thrown in any manner except overhand or sidearm. When bowling, the bowler can stand behind the endboard, or with one foot on the court, or with both feet on the court (but one of them must be touching the endboard.
8. A bowled ball can hit any object inside the bounds of the court, including the jack or another ball, but if it hits the far endboard it is disqualified and should be removed immediately from the court. If a ball already on the court is hit by another ball (bowled or struck by a bowled ball), it is live and still in play.
9. When all the balls have been bowled, the players determine which ball is closest to the jack (a measuring stick is hanging from the obstacle pole); that team will score one point. If that team has other balls that are also closer to the jack than any ball of the other team, those balls also count for one point each. No points are scored for the other's team's closest ball, or for any ball of the scoring team that is farther from the jack than the closest ball of the other team.
10. The play continues from that end of the court (behind the endboard as above). The team that did not score in the preceding play becomes the First Team.
11. Repeat steps 2 through 10.
12. The winner is the first team to reach 11 points.
13. Verbal or physical abuse, beer slinging, glass smashing, extreme cussing, poor sportsmanship or screaming like a banshee will not be tolerated. Any balls bowled by the offender during that round of play may be disqualified and removed from the court.
14. Bar employees may referee contested points or adjudicate rules decisions. These decisions are final, and any violation of Rule 13 directed toward any employee will result in the player's balls being removed. Permanently.
